Polish contemporary painter
Monika Ślósarczyk
Figurative painting of contemporary life. People are a recurring subject: crowds, work, leisure, movement, public space and social events. The artist transforms observed scenes through simplification, scale, colour and gesture. She avoids a single formula, allowing each painting to develop its own character. In some works, she also uses unconventional materials that become an integral part of the painting.

Artistic practice
Anything can become the subject of a painting
Monika Ślósarczyk creates figurative painting that engages with social issues and current affairs.
Observed scenes are not faithfully reproduced. The artist transforms them through gesture, intense colour, visual reduction and the painting’s textured surface. She captures moments as if in still frames, while retaining their movement, emotion and openness to interpretation.
Graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków, diploma in the easel painting studio of Prof. Jan Szancenbach, 1996.
Second Prize, Confrontation of the Youngest Artists of Kraków, Myślenice, 1997.
More than 200 solo and group exhibitions in Poland and abroad.
Matter and process
Matter is part of the painting
Texture develops in response to the needs of each painting. Monika Ślósarczyk works on raw or printed canvas, using materials including fragments of printed paper, pigments, pastel, sand, earth, spent coffee grounds and gilding leaf. Pre-existing prints, discolouration and irregularities may suggest forms and become part of the composition, while gilded elements introduce light, lustre and additional chromatic tension. Paint is applied, poured or sprayed, and the direction of its flow may be shaped with a stream of air. Matter builds up the painting’s surface, affects its colour and changes the way it reflects light.
